John Byrne on Campbell hunting tartan – card
Famous faces, famous fabrics
For just a wee country, Scots have been making waves on the world scene for quite a while. From actors to musicians, writers and more, Scotland has more than it's fair share of famous faces.
The tartan
The Icons collection pairs some of Scotland's most famous faces with one of their striking clan tartans.
Who am I?
John Byrne is a playwright and artist, known for The Slab Boys Trilogy and television drama Tutti Frutti. Several of his pieces, including a notable self portrait, hang in the Scottish Portrait Gallery.
John is shown on Campbell hunting tartan. Byrne is seen as a common misspelling, translation or other phonetic and historical variations of Bourne, which is a recognised sept, or subdivision, of the Clan Campbell.
The artwork
This bold, hand-drawn portrait captures essence of the subject with a flourish. It contrasts with the meticulously recreated geometry of the tartan pattern, whose colour is used throughout the piece.
