Famous faces, famous fabrics

For just a wee country, Scots have been making waves on the world scene for quite a while. From actors to musicians, writers and more, Scotland has more than it's fair share of famous faces.

The tartan

The Icons collection pairs some of Scotland's most famous faces with one of their striking clan tartans.

Who am I?

Val McDermid is a crime writer, of the ‘Tartan Noir’ genre, who has written over 40 novels, primarily in four series. A radical feminist and socialist, McDermid was also the first student from a Scottish sate school to be admitted to the University of Oxford.

Val is shown on Campbell of Argyll weathered tartan. McDermid is an informal sept, or subdivision, of the Clan Campbell.

The artwork

This bold, hand-drawn portrait captures essence of the subject with a flourish. It contrasts with the meticulously recreated geometry of the tartan pattern, whose colour is used throughout the piece.
